It is important for you to fully complete your Health History form and keep your massage therapist up to date on your condition.
Be sure to let your massage therapist know if you have:
Many health conditions may require gentler forms of massage therapy, or more specialized techniques and treatment plans. In many cases, your massage therapist may be able to develop a treatment plan that will work for you and your health situation.
Even some prescribed or over-the-counter medications can contraindicate receiving certain types of massage therapy. Be sure to list any medications you are taking and inform your therapist of any changes since your last visit.
In some situations, your massage therapist may request your physician's consent and recommendations before performing massage.
Manual Lymph Drainage (commonly referred to as MLD) is a gentle/light-pressure, non-intrusive, therapeutic form of soft-tissue mobilization which is designed to dramatically enhance lymph formation and promote drainage within the superficial and deep systems of the lymph vascular network. It is not massage in the traditional sense, rather it is a “systemic, rhythmic method of purposefully stretching and releasing the skin to produce an increase in volume of flow of the lymph fluid through the filtering system of the body.” (American Massage Therapy Association)
The therapy is widely used today for those individuals who experience lymphedema due to cancer treatment and the removal of lymph nodes, and is increasingly used for those who have recently undergone cosmetic surgery.
Manual Lymph Drainage is NOT deep tissue massage. It is NOT pushing fluid out of unhealed incisions. It does NOT involve the use of oils or creams, and it does NOT involve the use of wooden or other tools. Oils, creams and tools (cups, brushes, wood tools, electronic devices) may be useful further along in the healing process for post-surgical clients as supplemental services to treat specific concerns; however these are not part of standard manual lymph drainage. Manual Lymph Drainage requires the use of the therapist’s hands. If your therapist is primarily using tools and devices and not their hands, they are not providing manual lymph drainage.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Vodder Technique tends to have longer-lasting effects, particularly for medical or therapeutic purposes such as reducing chronic swelling (like lymphedema), promoting healing post-surgery, and supporting the immune system. Since the goal is to stimulate the natural flow of lymph fluid and reduce inflammation, the effects are gradual and can provide ongoing benefits as the lymphatic system continues to function more efficiently over time. With consistent sessions, the results will last longer as the body adapts to the improved lymph flow.
On the other hand, the Brazilian Lymphatic Massage is often aimed at more immediate, aesthetic outcomes such as reduced bloating or contouring of the body. These results are short-term, as the technique focuses on moving excess fluids out of tissues for a temporary slimming effect. Clients may notice immediate changes, but the results typically fade after a few days or a week as the body naturally reabsorbs fluids and returns to its baseline state.
MLD Vodder offers longer-lasting therapeutic benefits, while Brazilian lymphatic massage may offer quicker but temporary aesthetic effects.
When skillfully applied, MLD effectively reduces traumatic and post-surgical swelling/edema, and can provide symptomatic relief of migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), stress, fatigue, and more. MLD also induces general relaxation and detoxification.
Absolutely! Manual Lymph Drainage is commonly used for general wellness and to treat cosmetic issues such as bloat, cellulite, and rosacea.
People with the following conditions should not get MLD:
